The competition is open to Manx residents aged 13 to 19 years on 30th March 2024.
For 2024 there will be one single round and competitors will be asked to perform a theatrical response to a the theme below:
Prepare and perform two contrasting pieces around the theme of “Our Story”. Consider the viewpoint of a storyteller – ‘Your story, My story, Our Story”.
Selections can be musical or spoken but should demonstrate your versatility as an actor. Each piece should be presented “in character” and performed in context of the production. All performances must be memorised. When choosing material, we encourage you to showcase work that is meaningful to you rather than to the judge.
Gender roles can be fluid, but should not take away from the authenticity of the character.
Competitors will produce a maximum 10 minute response which could take the form of:
- An extract from a published play or song from a musical theatre that relates to the theme (similar to the approach taken by candidates in the past)
- A show reel that explores the theme in ways that combine elements of the spoken word with song, movement and/or the use of multi-media and sensory arts approaches
- An original work that is related to the theme
- An innovative theatre-based approach to the theme that explores new boundaries
The competition will be held on Saturday 30th March 2024 and the adjudicator will be Chris Baglin.
The Winner of the Young Actor of Mann will receive a Bursary to the value of £500 to be used towards a Drama related activity of their choice.
The winner will also hold the Young Actor of Mann Trophy and Title for twelve months. The Runner Up will receive £100.
